Compression Load Cells

Compression load cell drawingCompression Load Cells

Compression load cells are categorized by the way the sensor deflects when experiencing strain. A compression load cell is bent or compressed as opposed to a tension load cell which is pulled apart. Canister, beam, shear web, single point, and pancake are examples of compression-type load cells. No matter how specific or unique your application is, Load Cell Central can provide stock items off the shelf or design custom load cells to meet your needs.

When describing types of load cells, the term “compression” refers to the way the unit detects weight when converting force into electrical output. There are many types of load cells that fall under the compression category, including canister, beam, pancake, miniature, single point, and thru-hole load cells. No matter the size, function, output level or special feature, Load Cell Central has the complete inventory and custom manufacturing capabilities to meet your compression load cell needs.

Compression Load Cells and Compression/Tension Load Cells

Compression load cell technology is widely used in a range of industrial and technical applications. A compression load cell frequently features a low profile button or circular design that works excellently in conditions where both lateral and overhead space is limited. Models often have features such as threaded ends for easier installation and access to pre-existing applications. Certain compression load cells, such as our DTC miniature canister load cell, are also ideal for portable applications.

Compression load cells can be integral to applications in which the cell is required to carry the load from tension to compression and from compression to tension. Other examples of compression load cell applications include material testing, testing force calibration of presses and measuring industrial compressive force.

What is a compression load cell?

A compression load cell is a type of sensor that measures the amount of force being applied to it at any given time in relation to its dimensions. Applications for a compression load cell include weighing silos, pile load tests, vehicle scales, and more.

How do compression load cells work?

Compression load cells are sensors that measure force by detecting the deformation of the load cell while the force is being applied. Compression load cells work by converting the force applied to them into an electrical signal. This can then be measured and analyzed using specialized equipment and read through digital displays.
